SMS Nordic has delivered the mobile solution and equipement that SJ Persontrafik (a division of Swedish Railway) uses for selling tickets onboard the trains. The equipment consists of a Psion Workabout handheld, a portable printer and a specially designed infrared device for wireless transmission between the handheld and the printer.

SJ wants to enhance customer satisfaction by providing on-the-spot services during journeys. The services include information on train schedules, ticket issuing and fare collecting by whatever method of payment the traveler finds most convenient. This is meant to avoid loss of revenues due to closed ticket offices and stations.

A magnetic card reader is attached to the portable printer that enables the passenger to pay with credit cards and in cash. The conductor can even accept payments in foreign currencies. By implementing this solution, SJ has increased fair revenues and consumer satisfaction, especially for overnight passengers.
